New Bedford Detective Shot

According to the New Bedford Police Department, the investigator was shot near the junction of Rivet and Orchard Streets on Monday, July 17th, at about 8:45 p.m., while in an unmarked car. Detective Lavar Gilbert, the officer, was characterized as an experienced member of the force who worked in the Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau.

According to New Bedford Police Chief Paul Oliveira, Gilbert was in his car when rounds were fired, smashing his glass and injuring him in the face. Gilbert was able to go to the hospital on his own.

Soon later, another guy arrived at the emergency department, having been wounded in the foot, according to Chief Oliveira. Police are currently investigating the facts, and that individual is likely to recover as well.

The chief of police in New Bedford stated that no officers fired their weapons and that there was no reason to believe Detective Gilbert was intentionally targeted.

“Being informed an officer of your own was fatally shot is a phone call that no police deputy wants to receive,” stated Chief Oliveira in a statement. “On the other hand, I’m very thankful that our officer will be able to recover.” “This serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that officers face on a daily basis in order to keep our citizens safe.”

We appreciate the outpouring of community support, as well as the numerous law enforcement agencies who have contracted out. Please remember to pray for our investigator and his family while he heals.”
