Soon later, another guy arrived at the emergency department, having been wounded in the foot, according to Chief Oliveira. Police are currently investigating the facts, and that individual is likely to recover as well.
The chief of police in New Bedford stated that no officers fired their weapons and that there was no reason to believe Detective Gilbert was intentionally targeted.

Suspect Arrested
Authorities announced an arrest on Sunday, almost a week after a police investigator in New Bedford, Massachusetts, was wounded while working undercover in the city’s South End.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Cheybane Vasconcelos-Furtado, 20, was arrested Sunday afternoon at a home on Worcester Street in New Bedford by local police, state police detectives, members of the violent fugitive apprehension section, and ATF agents in connection with the shooting last Monday night.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Cheybane Vasconcelos-Furtado is currently charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, two counts of wanton destruction of property over $1,200, and one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon-serious bodily injury, carrying an illegal firearm, and carrying a loaded illegal firearm.
“While today is a well-deserved victory, there is still work to be done as this investigation continues and we follow up on leads,” New Bedford Police Chief Paul Oliveira said in a statement.

“We will not rest until every person involved in this shooting is in our booking room,” the head of police vowed. “Until then, I thank everyone for all they do and encourage everyone to keep Det. Gilbert in their thoughts as he recovers.”
Officials did not elaborate on what prompted the arrest of Cheybane Vasconcelos-Furtado, but the investigation into Monday night’s incident is still very active and ongoing.
More information was not immediately available, but Vasconcelos-Furtado is expected to be charged in New Bedford District Court on Monday morning. It was unclear if he had retained a counsel who could talk about the accusations he faces.
