Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry were accused of espionage for China during a counter-terrorism investigation.

Cash will appear in court on Friday after his and Christopher Berry’s charges under the Official Secrets Act. Cash gained access to parliament through his employment for an organization founded by Conservative MPs.

On Monday, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced that the men were charged with giving false information to China, a foreign state.

As part of an inquiry, police detained the two individuals on March 13, 2023, at locations in Edinburgh and Oxfordshire. They were then given bail and are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Friday.

Between January 20, 2022, and February 3, 2023, Cash of Whitechapel, East London, is accused of acquiring, gathering, recording, publishing, or disseminating notes, documents, or material “calculated to be, might be, or were intended to be, directly or indirectly, useful to an enemy.”

The guys have been granted bail and are scheduled to appear later this month at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Two Men Charged With Spying for China

Two British individuals, including a parliamentary researcher, have been accused of espionage for China following a counterterrorism police probe.

The Metropolitan Police said that Christopher Cash, 29, of Whitechapel, east London, a former researcher for Conservative Alicia Kearns, has been charged with violating the Official Secrets Act.

The same allegations are also against 32-year-old Witney, Oxfordshire resident Christopher Berry.

According to the allegations, Cash “obtained, collected, recorded, published, or communicated to any other person articles, notes, documents, or information, which were calculated to be, might be, or were intended to be, directly or indirectly, useful to an enemy” between January 2022 and February 2023 “for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the State.”

Berry was charged in December 2021 and February 2023 for the same offense.

The chief of the Counter Terrorism Command, Commander Dominic Murphy, stated: “This has been an incredibly complex investigation into what are very serious allegations.”

“As our inquiry has developed, we have collaborated extensively with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which has resulted in the two men being charged today.

“We understand that there has been some public and media interest in this case, but we would like everyone to please hold off on making any more comments or conjectures so that the criminal justice system can now conclude.”

“Christopher Berry, 32, and Christopher Cash, 29, will be charged with providing prejudicial information to a foreign state, China, and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 26 April,” stated Nick Price, head of the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division.

“There are ongoing criminal procedures against the defendants. Nobody should post anything online that would jeopardize their right to a fair trial, whether by reporting, commenting, or sharing it.

Kearns, the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, released a statement on X after learning of the news: Regarding the statement this afternoon by the Crown Prosecution that two men would face charges of spying for China, Neither I nor anybody else must comment on it.

Commander Dominic Murphy, the chief of the counterterrorism command, stated: “This has been an incredibly complex investigation into what are very serious allegations.” The two persons being charged today are the result of our tight collaboration with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout our investigation.

To allow the criminal justice system to finish its course, he said, “We understand that there has been some public and media interest in this case. However, we would ask others to refrain from any further comment or speculation.”

Christopher Cash was employed by the China Research Group, a company that Tom Tugendhat—the current minister of security—co-founded.

The organization’s members declared their intention to “promote fresh thinking about how Britain should respond to the rise of China” when they founded the group.
