Sudipta Mohanty, a Boston-based doctor, was arrested on suspicion of masturbating in front of a fourteen-year-old passenger while others slept.
US Attorney’s Office Massachusetts confirmed that Dr. Mohanty was arrested in Cambridge on Thursday for allegedly performing the act lewd aboard Hawaiian Airlines Flight 90 in May 2013 from Honolulu-Boston.
Mohanty, an internist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Boston, flew with a female passenger and sat beside this girl. The girl was traveling with her grandparents.

Incident Details
A Boston doctor is facing federal charges after allegedly engaging in indecent behavior in front of a 14-year-old girl on a Hawaiian Airlines trip last year.
According to the affidavit, about halfway through the trip, the girl saw that Mohanty had wrapped himself in a blanket, covering his entire body until his neck. His leg also seemed to be bouncing.
In the file, the woman noticed that Mohanty’s pants, which were unzipped and masturbating, had no longer been covered by the blanket.
After Sudipta Mohanty had used the toilet, the girl moved from her original seat and took a new one in another row. This was because the girl felt “disgusted but very uncomfortable,” according to the court filing.
The accused and his accomplice had held hands and cuddled with each other earlier. The affidavit says that “they were asking each another ‘basic’ level questions like, ‘What color is your favorite?’ (which) she found odd.”
After she arrived in Boston, the girl told her family and the police about the horrible incident.

Mohanty appeared visibly anxious when two FBI agents questioned him at his home. His hands and his voice both trembled, officials reported.
The man denied the accusation and said, “I can’t recall that at all.”
Arrested
Sudipta Mohanty was taken into custody on Thursday after his first court appearance in Boston. Although it was not known immediately if the defendant had a lawyer, a first appearance in federal court in Boston led to his arrest.

Joshua S. Levy made a public statement that stated, “Everyone has a fundamental right not to be subjected to lewd or sexually explicit conduct while on vacation.” “If the illicit behavior described here is committed, it will lead to your arrest, and you may be charged wherever that occurs.”
Christopher DiMenna (acting special agent, FBI Boston Division) added Mohanty worked ” reprehensible.”
Police Report
Sudipta Mohanty appeared in federal court in Boston on Thursday, charged with one count of lewd, indecent, and obscene actions while under the United States’ special aviation jurisdiction.
The crime carries a maximum punishment of 90 days in jail, one year of supervised release, and a $5,000 fine.
He was freed on his own recognizance with the condition that he remain away from persons under the age of 18 and any areas where they could congregate.
According to a spokeswoman for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the hospital is aware of the claims.
“This person is on leave and is not currently practicing at BIDMC.” “On personnel matters, we are unable to comment further,” the hospital stated in a statement.

In a statement, Acting US Attorney Joshua Levy stated, “Everyone, especially children, has the absolute right not to be exposed to lewd conduct while traveling.”
“If you engage in the type of illicit behavior alleged here, you will be caught and held accountable wherever it happens,” he warned.
Hawaiian Airlines has been contacted for comment. Mohanty could not be reached right away.
