Tailei Qi Wiki – Tailei Qi Biography
Tailei Qi is a doctoral pupil at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill who is suspected of fatally shooting a member of the faculty on campus on August 28, 2023, According to WRAL-TV.
Although authorities have not publicly named Qi as the shooter, the university acknowledged in its press release that the suspect was in detention and an employee was killed.

Zijie Yan, identified as an Associate professor who served as academic advisor to the graduate pupil, was killed in a fatal attack at UNC.

According to a statement from the chancellor of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, at 1:02 p.m. on August 28, 2023, UNC Police “were alerted of gunshots fired in Caudill Labs on our campus.” The perpetrator was arrested and is presently in jail about 2:30 p.m.”

According to the statement, “at approximately 4:15 p.m., police issued an ‘all clear’ to campus.” There is not a direct threat. UNC Police are collaborating with the Chapel Hill Police Department to collect facts and maintain a thorough and professional response.”
“I am deeply saddened to find out that one of our teaching staff tragically died in this shooting,” the message reads. We are awaiting verification that the next family has been notified before disclosing any further information.
FBI and state police are currently on the scene, and video from the location shows a gunshot hole through an open window on campus.
‘This photo represents a person of interest in current armed and risky person incident,’ police said in a statement. If you see this individual, stay your distance, prioritize your safety, and dial 911.’

Last month, a graduate physical sciences student asked for help making acquaintances on social media.

Following the news of the gunshot, students were seen rushing out the windows of the university in dramatic footage.
“Emergency: Armed, violent suspect on or near campus,” UNC police issued a series of notifications. Now get inside and avoid the windows.”
“!Alert Carolina!” shouted another. Update on the emergency: Remain sheltered in situ. This is a continuing problem. The suspect is still at large.”
Tailei Qi Is Doctoral Student
“Tailei Qi is a doctoral student at the faculty of applied physical science at UNC at Chapel Hill,” according to his LinkedIn page. He studies visually trapped nanoparticle arrays and the intriguing events that surround them. He has worked with 2D TMD photodetectors, optical tools (continuous wavelength laser and femtosecond laser), microspectroscopy (Raman, fluorescence, SHG, SEM, TEM, XDS, XPS, and XRD), and 2G HTS superconductors. His research interests include nanoparticle production and self-assembly, as well as machine learning.”
His motivation is unclear, as is his connection to the murdered faculty member.
The faculty member has not been named by the university. Former classmate Aiden Scott said to WRAL News, “I had no idea that he would be the type of man who might be able to do this kind of thing.” He was usually really silent.”
Scott went on to explain that Qi had difficulty speaking English, but that “every time he spoke to me, he appeared very nice.” I was stunned when I saw how he looked in the web stories.”
